How to Fix a Cantilever Gate Drifting Off the Track

A cantilever gate that drifts laterally during travel — shifting toward one side of the guide posts or pulling away from the fence line — puts stress on the rollers, the gate frame, and the operator, and will eventually cause a failure if left unaddressed.


This guide is for gate installers and fabricators troubleshooting a drifting or misaligned cantilever slide gate. We'll cover the roller system, guide post geometry, and frame-level issues that cause drift, and how to bring the gate back into spec.

What Causes a Cantilever Gate to Drift


Cantilever gate drift is a tracking problem — the gate is not following a true, consistent lateral path through its travel. The most common causes are roller misadjustment, worn roller wheels, guide posts that are out of plumb or incorrectly spaced, and gate frame issues that shift the gate's center of gravity.


Ground movement and frost heave are also significant factors on Ontario sites, where freeze-thaw cycles can shift post foundations several millimetres over a winter and pull a previously well-aligned system out of spec.



Inspect and Adjust the Bottom Rollers


The bottom rollers carry the gate's weight and control its lateral position throughout the travel range. This is the first place to check on a drifting gate.


Setting Roller Height and Lateral Spacing


Each bottom roller carriage has vertical height adjustment and, depending on the hardware, lateral guide adjustment.


The gate tube should sit fully within the roller groove with consistent contact — not riding on the edge of the wheel or sitting unevenly across the two carriages. If the height is mismatched between the lead and trail carriage, the gate will tilt slightly and track at an angle, pulling toward the lower side.


Adjust each carriage to achieve an equal, level height with the gate tube centered in the groove. After adjusting, cycle the gate manually by hand through its full travel and check that it tracks straight without lateral drift.


Replacing Worn or Flat-Spotted Rollers


Roller wheels wear over time and develop flat spots, groove wear, or cracking — especially on high-cycle commercial sites or installations in abrasive environments. A flat-spotted roller produces a rhythmic bump and a slight lateral kick each revolution that accumulates into visible drift over the full travel range.


With the gate held stationary, spin each roller wheel by hand and check for rough rotation, wobble, or visible flat spots. Replace any wheel that doesn't spin smoothly and true. Using mismatched rollers — different brands or profiles on the same carriage — can also introduce drift, so replace as matched pairs.


Check the Top Guide Rollers


The top guide rollers constrain the gate's lateral movement and prevent it from swinging outward at the top during travel. When these are misadjusted or worn, the gate is free to lean and drift in the upper portion of its frame.


Inspect the top guide rollers for wear and check their lateral clearance against the gate tube. The guide wheel should just clear the tube with a gap of 1–2 mm — tight enough to prevent meaningful lateral movement but not so tight that it drags and creates friction during travel.


If the gap is too wide, the gate can lean away from the guide post during travel and drift progressively. If it's too tight, the gate will bind and wear the guide wheel quickly. Adjust the guide carriage position to achieve the correct clearance, and replace any guide wheels that show significant wear or flat spots.


Inspect Guide Post Alignment and Spacing


Guide post geometry directly controls the gate's tracked path. If the posts are out of plumb or incorrectly spaced, the rollers cannot hold the gate on a true track regardless of how well they're adjusted.


Check each guide post for plumb in both axes using a spirit level. A post that has tipped forward or backward due to concrete cracking, frost heave, or inadequate embedment depth will pull the gate off its intended plane of travel.


Also verify the lateral distance between the lead and trail guide posts — it should match the gate tube width with the correct roller clearance on both sides. If the posts have moved, you'll need to assess whether they can be reset in place or require re-pouring.


On Ontario sites with shallow or undersized footings, post movement after a freeze-thaw cycle is common and worth addressing at the foundation rather than compensating with roller adjustments.


Check for Frame Warping or Uneven Gate Weight


A gate frame that has warped, twisted, or carries significantly uneven weight distribution will track differently at different points in its travel — making the problem look like a roller or post issue when it's actually the gate itself.


Lay a straightedge or long level across the face of the gate frame in multiple locations to check for twist. A twisted frame will contact the rollers unevenly, causing the gate to ride up on one side and drift toward the opposite side.


On welded steel frames, this can develop from thermal distortion during fabrication or from impact damage on site. Significant frame twist usually requires the gate to go back to a fabricator for correction — it cannot be resolved through roller or post adjustment alone.


Also check that any infill panels, decorative elements, or attached hardware haven't shifted to create an uneven weight distribution that biases the gate's travel.
